Biden v. Palin

Well Palin didn't crash and burn, unless ofcourse you consider answering questions with any substance part of debating. Clearly Palin did not come ready to debate. She came ready to offer several two minute sound bites, which she had memorized, after Gwen Ifil finished addressing her. She actually just recycled three answers. Iraq, taxes and energy. Regardless of the question, she talked about Iraq, taxes or energy.

No question about it, if you feel that tax cuts are the answer to every social, economic, and foreing policy problem you would be impressed with Palin's performance! It seems her answer to healthcare, education, nuclear proliferation, just about everything else, including the credit crisis, involves tax cuts! For that reason I don't think she was able to appeal to swing voters. She clearly would get the base excited because the base agrees that tax cuts will solve all of our problems, but swing voters see through that.

Biden was really on. He had an extremely difficult task. He obviously came in with the strategy of ignoring Palin and debating John McCain, which is probably the best thing he could have done. He did a great job slicing McCain apart on many issues, while Palin talked about Iraq, taxes and energy.

In the end, I am sure many people will be impressed by Palin's performance because the expectations were so low. After a day or two of digesting this debate, however, people will realize that she offered absolutley no substance. Although Palin indicated that she knows what it is like to have no healthcare she did not discuss a coherent healthcare policy. She does have a family, but she has no education policy. She lives in Alaksa near a great deal of oil, but has no solution or interest in global warming.

So the debate was a great opportunity to learn about this crazy lady from Alaska, but offered absolutely no solutions to any problems in our Country.

UPDATE:
The notion that Palin did not appeal to undecided voters has gotten some support from a CBS news poll conducted immediately after the debate.

Who won?
46% thought Biden won.
21% thought Palin won.
33% thought it was a tie.

Did the debate sway uncommitted voters?
18% of uncommitted voters committed to Obama/Biden
10% of uncommitted voters committed to McCain/Palin
71% remain uncommitted.

Interesting that Palin lives in Alaska and she does not fear global warming nor think that its causes have much to do with humans. Hmmm. One would think that she would bring forth more of an environmental side since she lives on a part of the melting polar ice cap!
