After the two conventions it is clear that this will be a close race. On the one hand the Republicans are offering a candidate with an amazing personal triumph that has no shame about using it as an answer for every question raised about his policies or character. The RNC seem to offer bitter nasty critiques of Obama, praise for McCain's POW experience, but absolutely no ideas or policies that will benefit the American people.
The fact that McCain was a POW does not answer how he is going to broaden or bring down the cost of healthcare coverage. It also does not answer how he is going to create jobs in a disastrous economy. It also does not answer how he is going to reverse the growing income inequality in this country.
McCain kept saying he was going to fight, fight for the people. Fight for what policies exactly? That sort of matters. In short, McCain uses his personal story to advance McCain's political ambitions. See here for more on that issue.
In contrast ,Obama has offered a compelling personal story as well, but has used that personal story to advance policies that will benefit the middle class over the rich. For example, Tax cuts for people making less than 250K, and a healthcare plan that covers everyone and a commitment to be oil free in ten years. McCain is offering the same tax plan that Bush had, which was a disaster, and the same energy plan that Bush had, which was also a disaster.
That is the choice as I see it. Now the race is on and I like Obama's chances.
